Oscar’s Curriculum 3

This weekend, March 30, 31, and April 1 2012, OKLAHOMA! will be presented at Central Bucks West High School in Doylestown, PA.  According to Wikipedia, “The original Broadway production opened on March 31, 1943. It was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances, later enjoying award-winning revivals, national tours, foreign productions and an Academy Award-winning 1955 film adaptation. It has long been a popular choice for school and community productions.[1]

During my tenure as a high school choral director, I had the opportunity to assist with two productions of  Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first triumph which debuted 69 years ago this coming Saturday!  I saw first hand how lives of the cast members were transformed.  I dare say that for one young woman, playing Aunt Eller was the highlight of her high school career, if not her life.   One of our Will Parker’s had so much charisma that we selected OKLAHOMA! specifically for him.  He was a natural – and a true cowboy at heart.

Oscar’s classroom is the stage. His curriculum is his songbook and shows.  What a privilege to witness each new generation discovering the joys and lessons of R&H.  On the eve of its anniversary, let’s sing or at least hum, “You’re doin’ fine, Oklahoma! Oklahoma O. K.!”
